Stratford athletes flourish in damp conditions

STRATFORD Athletic Club athletes continued their impressive form in the Midland Veterans League South Division on a damp evening at Leamington Spa.

Four wins in the 100m (Peter Coote, Christine Coote, Andy List, Paula Williams) kicked things off in great style. It is pleasing to see the club’s sprint coaching sessions are having a clear effect on performances and technique.

Peter went on to show solid form in the discus and shot. Christine won her age group in the high jump and picked up an excellent fifth place in the 400m.

Andy is really developing as a track runner and his rapid 400m (62.9) was poetry in motion.

Paula has been a model of consistency since joining the club and she equalled her personal best (event) before demonstrating her versatility with a creditable effort in the long jump and an outstanding debut in the discus.

It proved to be a successful fixture for the effervescent David Jones, who achieved personal bests in the high jump, 2km walk (by 0.5 seconds) and 400m (by 3.3 seconds).

Sarah Wheeler stamped her authority on the 400m and 1,500m, gaining two comfortable and confident victories in addition to a PB (1,500m). The race wins were never in doubt and Sarah could focus purely on running fast times.

The M35 and M40 1,500m proved to be one of the most entertaining events as a battle between David Smyth and Wayne Vickers kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. After barely being apart for the entire 3.75 laps David came out on top by 0.2 seconds.

There was an exciting conclusion to the the women’s medley relay. Great work from Paula Williams, Christine Coote, Sarah Wheeler and Sarah Bland ensured Stratford AC finished the night with a victory.

Sarah Bland ran a splendid anchor leg and battled hard in the home straight to the cheers of her team-mates. The club now sit third in the league table behind Worcester AC and Bromsgrove & Redditch AC.
