Stephens backs Stratford Town to prove their quality

STRATFORD Town midfielder Ben Stephens insists they are far better than their league position suggests.

But he stressed the players need to prove it by putting together a winning run.

Stephens says Carl Adams’ men have had plenty of positive moments so far but their position of 19th in the Southern League Premier Division doesn’t reflect their efforts.

But actions, not words, he stresses, are needed to propel Stratford up the table.

“Overall we have done alright but we all believe we are better than the league position shows,” said the former Kettering Town player.

“We have to take it game by game and get that consistency.

“I think it’s a sign of the progress that we are disappointed to be where we are but we are definitely improving. Let’s see no what we can do.

“We know there are areas we need to improve. We know we need to see games. We have had chances but it’s just not happened for us at the minute. We’ve been unlucky.

“But we have got to learn from that.

“Carl keeps talking about how important it is to be consistent. That’s how you become a better player and a better team.

“What we need to do is to put a run together and push our way up the league.”

Stephens netted twice in last week’s 7-4 Bigfreebet.com Challenge Cup win at Evesham United and then added another delightful finish in the 1-1 draw at home to Royston Town to take his tally to seven this season.

But the playmaker is setting himself a target to be among the Town top scorers.

“I’ve got seven goals now but I want to get ten goals by Christmas,” said Stephens. “I will see how I go to get to that target.”

Town take a break from the league action tomorrow (Saturday), with Bedworth United the opponents at the MoodChimp Stadium in the FA Trophy.

After the club’s record-breaking FA Cup run, Stephens admits they would love to put together another sequence in a national competition to put the club in the spotlight.

“Hopefully we can go on another little run in the FA Trophy, like we did in the Cup and see how far we can go,” he added.
