RUGBY UNION - Alcester cruise to fifth successive victory against Burbage

ALCESTER RFC ran in six tries as the league leaders beat Burbage 38-5 to secure their fifth successive victory and make the perfect start to the New Year.

Mark Burrell, Ed Gough, Will Silk, Jack Green, Jamie Harland and Lewis Wright all crossed for tries in a comfortable victory at Britannia Fields.

The result means Alcester remain top of the Counties 2 Midlands West (South) table, one point clear of closest challengers Manor Park.

And the Red and Blacks made a blistering start as Burrell scored the game’s opening try inside the first minute although the conversion was missed.

Alcester remained dominant despite the wet and boggy playing conditions as Gough carried the ball over the line and under the posts from a driving maul to set up an easy conversion for Tom Burgess.

And the visitors proved too strong for the Burbage defence as captain Silk drove over the line for Alcester’s third try after Gough drew in the defence.

Alcester extended their lead in the opening minutes of the second period as Green ran in Alcester’s bonus point try moments after the visitors had missed a penalty attempt.

And Harland was next to dot down for Alcester as he evaded several defenders to dot down before Wright scored the visitors’ sixth try when he ran to the line from deep within his own half.

The Red and Blacks were denied a shutout as Burbage crossed for their only try late on and held up another home attack at the death as the final whistle sounded.

Elsewhere, the club’s second team were beaten 50-10 by Manor Park 2nds with Luke Spencer and Dave Aldred scoring Alcester’s points whilst the latter left the field with a dislocated shoulder.

Alcester are next in action at home to Claverdon on Saturday, January 14 at Kings Coughton.
