Panthers look to hit back

STRATFORD will look to bounce back from their first defeat of the Birmingham League Division Three season when they meet Pelsall at Swans Nest Lane on Saturday.

Chris Whelan’s fifth-placed side slipped to a 24-run loss on Saturday at Rugby on the DLS method.

Rugby had totalled 241-9 off their 50 overs after they won the toss, but a rain interruption left Stratford with 33 overs to chase an amended target and they fell short.

Stratford struggled to make an early breakthrough as Rugby openers Raj Chohan (33) and Asaad Qureshi (26) put on 73 for the opening wicket.

A total of 19 wides from the Stratford bowlers helped Rugby lay down a platform and Matt Ewer accelerated the scoring, clubbing 58 from 42 balls to see Rugby to 241-9 in 50 overs.

James Urquhart took 3-46 for Stratford.

Dexter Purser gave the visitors a strong start, hitting 44 from 38 balls, at the start of their innings. He hit seven boundaries before he was out but an interruption for rain meant the game would rely on DLS to achieve a result.

Whelan hit 34 and Josh Hickman 24 but Stratford’s final total of 148-6 meant they fell 24 runs short.

Stratford 2nds also slipped to defeat to their Rugby counterparts, losing by 23 runs at Swans Nest Lane.

Rugby got to 229-9 off their 45 overs, with Bhavik Rathod top-scoring with 61 and Alex Smith hitting 49 not out.

WIll Noble led the bowling with 4-18 and Richard Smith took 3-42.

Nicholas Jones was the mainstay of the Stratford innings, hitting 57, but they were dismissed for 206 in 42 overs.

They head to Kidderminster on Saturday.
