FIVE members of Alveston Juniors took home medals from the annual restricted singles tournament for ‘even’ age groups.

Around 70 youngsters, from under-10s through to under-18s, featured in the competition at St Nicholas Park Leisure Centre in Warwick last Saturday.

George Baxter began the Alveston medal haul, despite being pipped for the gold medal in the boys’ U12 event. George won all but one of his games with the exception being the narrowest of defeats, 21-20, to overall winner Ryan McCool.

Club newcomer Joe Maynard marked his debut appearance in the competition with bronze in the Boys’ U14 event.

Having won all but one of his group matches, he then came up against eventual winner Matthew Forde in the semi-final, going down 21-11.

In the afternoon, Alveston’s girls took over the medal collecting, particularly in the U16 category.

Faith Christopherson powered through unbeaten to take gold while club-mate Beth Harris had to settle for bronze. Sandwiched between them was Ananya Kannan, from Coventry’s Jubilee club.

In the final event of the day, Ellie Sinclair collected a further bronze for Alveston in the Girls’ U18 event.

Alveston run weekly sessions all year round at North Leamington School and Stratford Girls Grammar School. Players wanting to improve their game can get further details from the club’s website www.AlvestonJuniors.co.uk.
