Alex triumphs in Great North Junior Run

STRATFORD Athletic Club youngster Alex Adams produced a superb performance to top a field of 636 runners as he won the Great North Junior Run under 11 race on Saturday, writes David Jones.

The event is a curtain-raiser to the main event held the following day and the 4km junior course starts on the Newcastle side of the River Tyne and takes the young runners across to Gateshead, via the Swing Bridge.

The course then loops along the river, before the athletes go back across the Gateshead Millennium Bridge towards the finishing line on the Newcastle side.

This was the last year that ten-year-old Adams was able to compete in the under 11 event and he took his chance in fine style.

His finishing time of 15 minutes and five seconds was a comfortable 14 seconds ahead of the second placed runner.

This fast, maturing athlete bided his time, tucked in behind the leaders, until, with a mile to go, he moved up into first place, a position he did not relinquish.

It was then time to take his place at the top of the podium to collect his richly deserved medal and trophy before a long drive home, arriving close to midnight, enabled this very talented runner to compete in the club championships the following day.

The future of Stratford Athletic Club is indeed in safe hands with the likes of Adams and his ilk as members.
