THE CHAMPAGNE corks were popping as Stratford Athletics Club scooped four prizes at Stratford District Council’s Sports Awards.

The Observer has been previewing those in the running for the NFU Mutual Community Sport Award and VASA Volunteer of the Year category over the past fortnight.

And in addition to the club’s junior team winning the community of the year award, high jumper Rory Dwyer walked away with Senior Sports Person of the Year.

Junior Sports Person of the Year was awarded to runner Agnes McTighe and club chairman Paul Hawkins took home the Stratford Coach or PE Teacher of the Year award.

Meanwhile in the VASA Volunteer of the Year category, Stratford-on-Avon & District Boxing Academy’s Mathew Pickering was rewarded for his tireless dedication to helping others.

The event, which is designed to recognise the year’s sporting triumphs and reward the hard work of volunteers, coaches and  supporters from across the district, was attended by more than 250 guests including Stratford’s own Paralympic gold medallist James Roe, teammate Lily van den Broecke and England rugby international and World Cup winner, Laura Keats.
