Stratford Almshouses get their own plaque

THE ALMSHOUSES have taken their place on Stratford’s historical equivalent of the Walk of Fame.

Pavement plaques are being installed along the Historic Spine – from Shakespeare’s Birthplace in Henley Street to Holy Trinity Church in Old Town – which runs through High Street, Chapel Street, Church Street and Old Town.

The project, led by the Stratford Society and the Historic Spine Working Group, aims to draw attention to standout buildings along the route.

It has been several years in the making, and the installation of the Almshouse pavement plaque this week marks the end of stage one of the initiative.

There are now a total of 16 plaques laid along the historic spine and work has started on designing and installing more.

The numerous buildings of interest along the route range from the 14th century to the 20th century and include The Public Library, The Market Hall, The Garrick Inn, Harvard House and the Corn Market.
