Warwick to Paris bike ride team given help from police escort

CYCLING to Paris is no mean feat but a group from Warwick managed it – thanks to help along the way from a police escort.

Friends at Nuffield Health in Warwick planned to cycle to the French capital to celebrate a birthday, but after a gym worker was diagnosed with cancer they knew they had to help.

They enlisted the help of some other gym-goers – with some not even owning their own bikes until they signed up.

The 20-strong team recently set off on the 350 mile ride from Warwick to raise money and awareness for cancer support charity Macmillan.

It was not all plain sailing – the cyclists planned to catch the ferry from the port of Newhaven to Dieppe, but after running late found themselves needing a police escort to make their boat on time.

After four tiring days the team finally made it to Paris, raising an impressive £10,000 for the charity.

A spokesman for the team said: “Macmillan go above and beyond to help provide support and care for patients and the families of people suffering with cancer.

“The charity is particularly important to the Nuffield Health Warwick team as one of our nearest and dearest, Sean Mitchell was recently on the receiving end of the care of the Macmillan team after being diagnosed with cancer himself.

“Not one to be defeated – Sean also donned his lycra and lead our team to Paris.”
