SWFT boss to help struggling A&E departments

STRUGGLING A&E departments are to follow the ‘tried and tested’ route to success used by South Warwickshire Foundation Trust (SWFT).

Trust chief executive Glen Burley has joined an ’emergency support team’ set up by the Department of Health to help failing urgent care departments across the country until March 2016.

Mr Burley has taken on the role of senior responsible officer, which he will do alongside his position at SWFT.

He will be responsible for the direction of the emergency care programme which will help 27 accident and emergency departments deal with increased winter pressures.

Tried and tested improvements such as consultant-lead departments, avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions and early intervention for elderly patients will be introduced as part of the programme. All of these methods are already used by SWFT under a scheme called the Health Foundation Acute Flow project.

Mr Burley – who took over running the trust nearly a decade ago and balanced the books after a £20million debt – said: “My desire to lead this programme comes from our own experience with the Health Foundation project.

“I am particularly pleased to see our message that flow should be looked at across entire health and social care systems has been taken on board nationally.

“It is also encouraging to see that our integrated South Warwickshire system has been identified as one of a small number of high performing systems through this programme.”
