Supported housing scheme opens doors in Shipston

A £1.25 million supported housing scheme for local people with learning disabilities is about to open its doors in Shipston.

The Rosedale scheme will open on Monday (June 9), providing ten affordable flats with on-site support from Heart of England Mencap.

They will offer local people with learning disabilities independent living in a supported environment. Among those who could benefit is anyone in transition from school or living with family but wanting to live more independently.

There are also communal areas, including a sitting room, conservatory and garden.

The new housing, in Stratford Road, is a partnership between Heart of England Mencap, housing provider Orbit Heart of England and Stratford District Council. Funding has also come from the Home and Communities Agency.

Work started last August to replace two houses – which were no longer fit for purpose – with the new flats.

Helena Wallis, chief executive at Heart of England Mencap, said Rosedale marked a new era in supported living in south Warwickshire: “There is a move away from residential care homes towards independent living accommodation, in a supported environment, which takes into account the changing needs of the existing and new residents requiring a home and providing the appropriate level of support.

“Rosedale is a wonderful new facility. It is eco-friendly and has been specifically designed to integrate and merge with the local brick cottage style. Most importantly we are delighted by how positively our customers have responded to this exciting opportunity which will enable them to live independent lives with appropriate support for their needs.”

A time capsule will be buried on site with residents joined by local schoolchildren while there are also plans for a neighbourhood event to show residents around Rosedale.

Helen Petitdemange, business development manager for Orbit Independent Living, added: “We are delighted the new scheme is almost ready and we look forward to welcoming the residents to their new homes.”
