ECO-FRIENDLY residents in the district are once again among the country’s best recyclers.
Stratford District Council has maintained its position as one of the top ten performing local authorities in England for household recycling and composting.
Last year saw an increase in the district’s household recycling rate from 60.4 per cent to 61.3 per cent, which is even more impressive considering four of the top ten councils saw a reduction in their recycling rate.
Stratford came in tenth, behind the East Riding of Yorkshire Council (65.4 per cent) at the top; Rochford District Council (63.9per cent); South Oxfordshire District Council (63.8 per cent); West Oxfordshire District Council (63.4 per cent); Vale of White Horse District Council (62.5 per cent); Surrey Heath Borough Council (62.3 per cent); Three Rivers District Council (61.9 per cent); South Northamptonshire District Council (61.4 per cent); and Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council (61.3 per cent).
Council community spokesman Mike Brain, said: “Again, thanks to our residents and their commitment and support for recycling we are still in the top ten.
“This year has seen the start of our ‘Recycle Right’ social media campaign to help residents identify what items can and cannot be recycled.
“The service we provide is designed to make recycling easy – however, 53 per cent of the contents of an average refuse bin in the district can be recycled. The daily tweets and Facebook posts for ‘Recycle Right’ will hopefully help with daily reminders and help us improve our performance this year.”
