RAIN failed to dampen the spirits of runners in this year’s Rotary Shakespeare Marathon.

Some 1,500 runners competed in the full and half marathon on Sunday (April 27), organised by Stratford Rotary Club in aid of charities including Shakespeare Hospice and Stratford Samaritans among others.

First home in the men’s marathon was Mark Sands from Lincolnshire, with Laura Holton from Somerset taking first place in the women’s event.

David Bell from Gloucestershire took the men’s half marathon title, while there’s was home town success in the women’s event as Laura Holton led home the field.

Runners lined-up at the start in Church Street before making their way out of town into the countryside returning to the finish line at the recreation ground.
