SHAKESPEARE Birthplace Trust is top of the class.

Shakespeare Week, organised by the Trust, has been named as having the best Educational Initiative in the UK at the Museums & Heritage Awards for Excellence – the ‘Oscars’ of the museums and heritage industry.

The annual celebration, which aims to give primary schoolchildren a great first encounter with Shakespeare, was named the joint winner – alongside the Imperial War Museum for its learning projects – in the Educational Initiative category at the prestigious awards.

Jacqueline Green, Head of Learning and Participation at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, said: “To see Shakespeare Week grow from our desire to transform young people’s perceptions of Shakespeare into a project that in its first year saw half a million children and their teachers enjoying Shakespeare has been a tremendous experience.

“It is a huge pleasure to work with so many other cultural organisations that like us have a passion for sharing our rich cultural heritage with young people.

“Winning this award is a fantastic recognition of all the hard work and commitment put in by our team and our many collaborators, and I’d like to thank everyone who has embraced this initiative.”

The awards, created by The Museums and Heritage Show, recognise the leading lights of the heritage sector and celebrate excellence and innovation at museums, galleries and visitor attractions across the UK and Europe.
