Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations shake-up draws in the crowds

Stratford Editorial 22nd Apr, 2018   0

A SHAKE-UP of the Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations is drawing in the crowds.

Thousands have descended on a sunny Stratford to mark the 454th anniversary of the Bard’s birth.

The annual celebration has been given a carnival makeover, and Saturday’s Parade included – alongside the traditional flag unfurling – the Community Literary Carnival Pageant, which included fiction-inspired entries from Peter Pan to Where’s Wally.

Today saw the Shakespeare Service at Holy Trinity, with the head boy from Shakespeare’s own King Edward VI School carrying the quill in procession to the church where the Bard is buried.

And the weekend’s celebrations are also seeing the town host the UK’s first National Living Statue Championship. Participants from the UK and around the world are performing throughout the weekend in Bancroft Gardens. The winners will be announced this afternoon at the Bandstand on the Recreation Ground.

The Market Village can also ve found on the Recreation Ground with up to 80 stalls, street entertainment, street food, and live music.
