RSC has perfect ingredients for new dining venue

Stratford Editorial 7th Apr, 2017 Updated: 7th Apr, 2017   0

THE ROYAL Shakespeare Company (RSC) has introduced a new intimate dining venue at its Stratford theatres.

Circle Bar and Dining, located at the top of theatre’s famous spiral staircase, offers visitors simple pre-theatre meals in elegant surroundings overlooking the Avon, surrounded by pictures from the RSC’s art collection, and just a few seconds walk from the RST auditorium. It is ideal for those looking for a quicker bite than in the Rooftop Restaurant a floor above.

A floor down does not however mean a step down in quality. The Circle Bar’s menu is limited but the quality is every bit as excellent as that in the Rooftop. A chef will be on-hand in the new dining space to carve and plate up the food for diners.

Currently offering two mains option – Alden’s of Oxford’s 28 day dry aged roast sirloin of beef, with gratin potatoes and salad, and a vegetarian option in Baked Portobello mushroom, filled with wild mushrooms, shallots, butternut squash, feta cheese and walnuts, gratin potatoes and salad – there are plans to possibly add a third option, although whether that is necessary with beef this good is open to question.

There is also a choice of three starters and three deserts, plus coffees and petit fours, together with wines, beers, and spirits.

The RSC is also introducing a range of gourmet hotdogs at Susie’s Café Bar based at the company’s The Other Place down the road from the RST.

There, diners can now choose from a new range of gourmet hotdogs – from Hawaiian inspired with pineapple salsa and crispy cured maple bacon to a Balti style hotdog with curry sauce, mint yogurt, crispy onions and crushed poppadums.

And there’s even the Shakespeare hotdog, based on ‘fidget pie’ popular in Shakespeare’s day, which includes onions glazed in ale, black pudding, stilton and apple.

RSC executive chef Simon Malin said: “Food, like the theatre, brings people and families together which is why I’m excited to introduce our brand-new dining space and food offer, plus a range of fantastic gourmet hotdogs to open up more of the RSC to people looking to have a great shared culinary experience.”
