DETECTIVES investigating the discovery of a man’s body in a river in Leamington believe they have identified him.
Police were called shortly before 6.25am on Friday following a report of a body having been seen in the River Leam in Jephson Gardens, close to Willes Road.
The cause of death remains unknown but police have said it was being treated as suspicious. Jephson Gardens was closed to the public at the weekend and part of the riverside walk towards Newbold Comyn was also taped off. A police car was parked next to the Willes Road bridge on Saturday and Sunday.
Det Insp Teresa McKenna said: “Thank you to everyone who shared our earlier appeal to help identify this man.
“Following our appeal we received a number of calls and while formal identification is yet to take place, we believe the man to be a 65-year-old from Leamington.
“Our thoughts remain with the man’s family at this difficult time who are being supported by specially trained officers.
“While investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident, we would still like to hear from anyone who may have been in the area between midnight and 6am on Friday morning and may have seen something or has dashcam footage that could assist with our enquiries.”
