Number of nuisance calls on the rise

NUISANCE calls are an increasing problem for Warwickshire residents – particularly for the elderly and vulnerable.

A survey has revealed an average of 12 unwanted calls are received by county residents each month, with one in ten people plagued by up to 30 calls.

More than half have had a nuisance caller repeatedly nag them even when told to stop calling, while one in five have either been scammed over the phone or know someone who has.

The same number of residents also said they felt pressured into giving money to a charity, and that nuisance calls were the biggest concern for elderly relatives living on their own.

The study, commissioned by CPR Call Blocker, found the most prolific types of nuisance calls were PPI claims and car accident compensation calls.

Kris Hicks from CPR Call Blocker said: “Our survey shows that as a nation, we are still being hounded by unscrupulous call centres, despite politely asking to be taken off databases and being careful about giving out our details in the first place.

“It’s often the most vulnerable people in society who are the most susceptible to being scammed over the phone and our research shows that nuisance calls rank highly on the list of concerns we have for elderly relatives living on their own.”

He added nuisance callers could be combated by residents adding details to the Telephone Preference Service, giving out a call-blocking number such as 01111111111 on forms, complaining to Ofcom or installing a a call blocker to landlines.
