Guide dog pups meet name-sakes

Laura Kearns 29th Oct, 2017

TAILS were wagging when guide dog puppies met their famous namesakes.

Four-week-old Labrador Retriever cross pups Danny and Daly were named after Wasps rugby players Elliot Daly and Danny Cipriani.

The team members visited the centre near Leamington to meet the two puppies who were named after them.

Wasps and British & Irish Lions star Elliot said: “It brought a smile to my face when I heard the news so I was keen to meet my namesake in person.

“The visit brought home the important role that the National Breeding Centre plays in bringing through young guide dogs that are essential to a lot of people’s daily lives – I’d urge all dog lovers to pay a visit and show their support.”

Joanne Bass looks after the puppies’ guide dog mum, a five-year-old Labrador called Maya.

The rugby season ticket holder knew as soon as she saw the pups that she had to name them after members of her favourite team.

She said: “I absolutely love Wasps so I thought nominating names for the dogs after a couple of their players would be a nice thing to do.

“I’m over the moon that the players decided to come along to meet the puppies who were born at the National Breeding Centre and will remain there until they are six weeks old. Then they will begin their training to become a guide dog.”

The Breeding Centre breeds up to 1,400 puppies a year – using a number of breeds including Golden Retrievers, Labradors and German Shepherds.
