A FORMER Warwickshire Police sergeant has been jailed after pleading guilty to sexual offences against children.

Christopher Cambray appeared at Birmingham Crown Court where he was handed a nine-year sentence and given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order stopping him from having unsupervised contact with anyone under 18.

In September, the 42-year-old former Whitnash beat bobby pleaded guilty to six offences including sexually abusing a boy, paying another victim for sex, two of making indecent photographs, and one of taking indecent photos.

Cambray, who lives in Shrewley, was suspended from duty with Warwickshire Police after being arrested in September last year, and was dismissed from duty at a Special Case Hearing chaired by Chief Constable Martin Jelley in July.

Cambray was named trainee of teh year in 2002, and was honoured as Probationer of the Year while working in Whitnash by then Warwickshire Police Ch Con John Burbeck.

Dep Insp Vikki Reay said: “Throughout the investigation, our key concern has been the welfare, protection and well-being of the children involved.

“Ensuring that those who commit crimes are brought to justice is our overriding focus, second only to preventing crime from happening in the first place.  That’s how we best serve our communities and it is essential to maintaining public trust and confidence.”

Dep Supt Gary Watson reassured people all Warwickshire Police staff were subject to the highest scrutiny and vetting in advance of starting a job with the force.

He added: “It is distressing for all concerned when one of those officers is found guilty of a crime that is among one of the most challenging and incomprehensible with which we deal.”

Cambray was ordered to register as a sex offender and after serving his sentence will also have to tell  police where he is living.
