Fire chiefs warn against open fires

Stratford Editorial 4th Jul, 2018   0

FIRE chiefs are warning residents to take care after tackling a number of grass fires during the heatwave.

Crews received more than 100 calls over the weekend including 18 in parks and open areas – with some thought to have been started deliberately.

A fire spokesperson said: “If you start a fire in parks or woodland areas with this intense heat, it will spread very quickly. This means that you are not only endangering yourself by setting the fire, but more importantly, you are also risking the lives of our crews and the communities we serve.

“We are urging those starting fires to think before they act, the last thing we want is to have a major fire on our hands where lives are at risk, when it could so easily have been prevented.

“Equally we are sure that you don’t want a criminal record and potentially a prison sentence. Let’s put a stop to arson.”

While some fires were accidental – caused by discarded rubbish in woodland areas where the dry ground helped them spread.

Discarded embers from a log burner set two trees on fire in Fenny Compton, and a fire at the base of a tree near Baddesley Clinton prompted a warning on social media to not leave disposable barbecues or glass bottles which could also start a blaze.
