EXTRA funds will help tackle road safety issues in areas of Warwickshire affected by the HS2.

Warwickshire County Council will receive £8million from the Department for Transport (DfT) to help off-set disruption caused by the high speed railway which will cut through the heart of the county.

The cash will be used to fund traffic calming measures and safer crossings and junctions for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

Council spokesman Coun David Reilly said: “Warwickshire will be adversely impacted upon by HS2 and this new Government funding will help us to provide better road safety solutions in the right areas on our road network.

“WCC will be identifying the appropriate priority schemes throughout the HS2 route corridor in Warwickshire. These schemes must provide the most effective road safety improvements to help reduce the number and severity of accidents.”

The main construction works for Phase One of HS2 – from London to the West Midlands – are due to begin next year. The first train services are due to run in 2026.
