Experts urge readers to give a helping hand to songbirds this winter

Stratford Editorial 25th Dec, 2017   0

WINTER is not an easy time for birds.

Richard Copland captured this photo of goldfinches enjoying a festive feast in his Coventry garden.

With shorter days and colder nights they must eat a lot of food just to ensure they have enough energy to survive until morning.

And the RSPB is appealing to readers to lend a helping hand by putting out fresh water and high energy foods, such as fat balls and nuts.

An RSPB spokesman said: “Remember to give a little extra help to our songbirds over the winter.

“This is the hardest time of year for our feathered friends, natural food sources are in short supply and with it being so cold, they need extra food to keep their energy levels up to stay warm.”
