ECO-FRIENDLY folk in Stratford district remain among the best recyclers in the country – and that’s official.

Residents have hit the 60 per cent recycling mark according to latest Government figures.

Stratford District Council has maintained its position in the top ten councils for recycling and composting for the third year with a recycling rate of 60.3 per cent for 2014/15. It puts the district council in 10th out of a total of 320 councils nationwide.

Coun Mike Brain, district recycling spokesman, said: “We’ve hit 60 per cent and this is great news – our best figure ever! “And it’s thanks to our residents that we’ve been able to achieve this result with their commitment and support for recycling.

“The service we provide is designed to make recycling easy and our residents have responded to that by ensuring they recycle as much rubbish as possible and by limiting the amount of other waste that is produced.”

Coun Brain added it was important residents continued to recycle.

“One of the reasons why we are performing so high is because more residents are regularly putting food in the green bin and the weekly collection of electric/electronic goods, textiles and batteries is continuing to be very popular.

“Residents can now see that their efforts and diligence has paid off.”

Near neighbours South Oxfordshire District Council was top of the recycling poll with a 67.3 per cent rate, followed by

Vale of White Horse District Council, also in Oxfordshire, with 65.6 per cent, and Rochford District Council in Essex with 65.2 per cent.
