THE FLAG was hoisted high in Alcester to mark Commonwealth Day.

Members of Alcester Royal British Legion group and dignataries from Alcester Town Council gathered for the first celebration of the international body – formed mostly by former territories of the British Empire – on Monday (March 14).

Councillor Mike Gittus said: “An inclusive Commonwealth is the theme for 2016 – this replicates the aspirations of our local community and reflects well over the Stratford district.

“In every direction I see examples of organisations embracing community harmony through volunteering and friendships.

“We are very lucky to live in such a privileged area of the Commonwealth and should always strive to support those areas less fortunate.”

The Commonwealth flag was also raised outside Stratford District Council’s Elizabeth House headquarters.
