Carers urged to share experiences at special forum

CARERS are being invited to put their feet up as part of a new scheme.

Heart of England Mencap is behind the ‘Care & Share’ forum in Stratford, which is designed to provide a relaxed, informal base where carers can meet, chat and support each other.

The first forum – set to take place at Tyler House on Friday June 10 between 12.30pm and 2.30pm – will coincide with National Carers Week.

The forum is open to all carers – not just those with loved ones supported by Heart of England Mencap. People can drop-in on the day while paid carers are also welcome to seek and share advice as well.

The Care & Share forum was the idea of Support Worker Rebecca Newbury. It is hoped it will be the first in a regular series.

Rebecca said: “Carers are amazing, they do an incredible job supporting loved ones for very many reasons, but of course it can be a very difficult role at times too.

“What we want to do is provide a really relaxed environment where any carer can drop-in for a cup of tea and piece of cake and chat to people in similar situations. Sharing stories and experiences – and gaining strength and support through that.”

Also as part of Carers Week, Heart of England Mencap is encouraging and helping both paid and unpaid workers to complete an online questionnaire set up by the Department of Health as the government develops a new strategy to support carers.

“This is a really important opportunity to influence Government strategy and now is the time for you to make sure your voice is heard,” Rebecca added.

“It is vital that views are gathered from all quarters so that the new strategy reflects carers lives now, the health and financial concerns they have and give them support they need to live well whilst caring for a family member or friend.”

Computers and support will be available at the forum on June 10 for anyone wishing to complete the survey there.
