British Motor Museum mini to feature in Queen's 90th birthday parade

THE FIRST Mini Minor from the British Motor Museum at Gaydon will be one of 90 special British cars to feature in The Queen’s 90th birthday parade next month.

The parade will feature vehicles representing the cream of the British motor industry and will include a vehicle manufactured in a specific year of Her Majesty’s life.

The vehicles will be lined up on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace on October 15 and will be inspected on behalf of The Queen by Prince Michael of Kent.

The line-up will include the most iconic vehicles of the British motor industry during the last 90 years, from a 1926 Bullnose Morris Oxford Tourer through to a 2016 Jaguar F-Pace.

The Mini Minor from the British Motor Museum left the Cowley line in May 1959 with the registration plate 621 AOK.

Designed by one time Kenilworth resident Alec Issigonis, it cost £537 new and its top speed was 72mph.

The car will be driven in the parade by Martin Williams, one of the mechanics at the British Motor Museum.

Martin said: “I am very excited about this opportunity. I only joined the museum in June and feel very honoured to be able to drive the Mini No1 as part of HM The Queens Birthday celebrations.”

* CLASSIC cars will be on the road to the British Motor Museum.

More than 150 classic cars are set to gather outside the Gaydon museum for the Autumn Classic and Fringe on Saturday (September 25).

The new collections centre building will be open and visiting car enthusiasts will have the chance to see the reserve collections from the British Motor Museum and the Jaguar Heritage Trust, as well as the newly refurbished museum.

This year’s event will also feature visits from the Jenson Interceptor Club and the Micro Kiers Cars from Japan.

Entrance is open to both clubs and individuals in a classic car for £9 per person.
