RESIDENTS in Stratford district could feel the effect of the closure of maternity services at the Alexandra Hospital fear council chiefs.

Stratford District Council leader Chris Saint – together with fellow council leaders in Redditch and Bromsgrove – has raised concerns at the temporary closure of the neonatal unit at the Redditch hospital under emergency powers due to not having enough staff to operate safely.

He said: “This is very worrying and signals bad news for district residents in Alcester, Studley and the surrounding area, who will now have to travel further afield for maternity services.”

The decision to move all birth services from Alexandra Hospital in Redditch to Worcestershire Royal Hospital with immediate effect was announced recently.

Bosses at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust – which runs both sites – said the decision would be reviewed in February.
