WARWICKSHIRE capped a three-game week by earning themselves a place in the next round of the Double Rink Walker Cup.
The women won by nine shots against Devon at Portishead Bowls Club with a 44-35 scoreline, which followed a fine 133-98 win against Nottinghamshire in a friendly and defeat in the Johns Trophy to Wiltshire.
Moira Parsons (Welford) with Liz Wooding (Avenue Coventry), and Heather Mills (Grange Ladies) alongside Sue Hornsby (Lillington) went 14-3 up after seven ends, and despite a mini-revival from the hosts, managed to win 25-15.
The partnerships of Kirsty Richards with Helen Slimm (both Whitnash) and Di Medhurst (Stoke) with Gill Maund (Sherwood Park), trailed 9-2 before coming back to lead 11-9, but fell at the last 20-19 as the only losing Warwickshire rink.
In the Johns Trophy, Warwickshire lost by four rinks, which harms their chances of reaching the regional finals.
A win against Gloucestershire can boost their chances a week on Saturday, when the club hope to be in better form, with the only winning rink coming from Richards with Slimm and Medhurst with Maund – who won 26-13.
Meanwhile, Jenny Corn with Jacqui Cook (both Lillington), and Joy Cooke (Blossomfield) with Elaine Taylor (Stoke) put in a valiant effort to recover from a 16-3 deficit to secure a 20-20 draw.
The friendly at Solihull Municipal Bowls Club required a comeback despite the emphatic final scoreline, with Debbie Bloxham and Lilian Hope (both Stratford), and Thelma Orberson (Avenue Coventry) with Di Wilkinson (Stoke) eventually winning 33-19 – the biggest winning scoreline – after initially trailing.
The club were in action on Wednesday (June 26) in a Middle England League (MEL) tie at Leicestershire and then face Gloucestershire in the MEL on Wednesday.
