THE Stratford-upon-Avon and District Table Tennis League made its return across three divisions and featured county players from Warwickshire and Worcestershire.
In Division One, reigning champions Stratford Racketeers began their title defence against Shottery.
Debs Barrow and Tom Burnett edged past Gary Stewart and Rob Poole in a nail-biting 11–8 encounter although Shottery’s Gary Stewart remained unbeaten on the night.
Elsewhere, Littleton Lynx marked their league debut with a commanding 15–2 victory over Team MND, thanks to the consistency of Craig Witherford.
The final Division One clash saw Stratford Blazing Paddles take on JLM Hussars, with Stratford Chair Kevin Taylor facing his former club in a gripping contest.
A series of five-set thrillers culminated in a fitting 12–12 draw that also epitomised the spirit of the night.
In Division Two, newcomers Quinton Table Tennis Club marked their arrival with a hard-fought 11–10 victory over Littleton.
And Ilmington underlined their credentials with a 15–0 clean sweep against Stratford Edgeshots.
Division Three also provided plenty of talking points, as Stratford Junior Blue overcame Ashorne Spirits 10–8, with juniors Alfie Musk and Herbie Langstone shining for Stratford.
Despite the defeat, Ashorne’s Steve Handsley impressed throughout, remaining undefeated and taking home the player of the match award.
League Chair Taylor said: “It’s fantastic to see the league thriving once again.
“Table tennis continues to be a sport that unites people of all ages and backgrounds, and the opening week has already shown the high standard of play and enthusiasm we can look forward to this season.”
The Stratford League runs weekly fixtures throughout the season, with matches taking place across Stratford-upon-Avon and the surrounding villages.
