A TABLE TENNIS league in Stratford-upon-Avon continues to flourish under new leadership.

The Stratford-upon-Avon and District Table Tennis Association (SUTTA) has grown from 12 to 19 teams in the space of three years under the leadership of chair Kevin Taylor since 2021.

Former Mayor of Stratford-upon-Avon Taylor took the reins after SUTTA faced declining membership numbers and limited community engagement.

However, Taylor has since focused on inclusivity, grassroots development and strong community partnerships.

Taylor said: “SUTTA embarked on a comprehensive development plan aimed at boosting participation at all levels. The initiative began with a targeted recruitment drive, reaching out to local schools, community centers, and workplaces.

“The association also introduced a new Fast Format League structure ,designed to attract beginners and casual players to the sport. These efforts proved successful, with a noticeable uptake in membership and participation within the first year.

“In addition to these community-focused initiatives, the association has placed a strong emphasis on coaching and player development. New coaching programs were established, offering tailored training for players of all abilities, from novices to advanced competitors.

“SUTTA also introduced a mentoring scheme, pairing experienced players with younger or less experienced members, fostering a supportive environment where skills and sportsmanship could flourish.”

Taylor also expanded the District League in 2021, previously dominated by a handful of well-established clubs. The league now has 19 teams representing a wide range of skill levels and backgrounds and has increased competition.

Taylor added: “The success of SUTTA over the past three years has set a strong foundation for the future. With plans already in place to introduce more youth-oriented programs and to further expand the league, the association shows no signs of slowing down.”

Taylor remains committed to the association’s mission of making table tennis accessible to all, fostering a lifelong love of the sport in the Stratford-upon-Avon district ahead of the upcoming season.
