ALEX Bretherton, a member of Stratford-upon-Avon Table Tennis Club has qualified to compete at the World Parkinson’s Table Tennis Championships.

Bretherton, who lives with Parkinson’s disease, will head to Hanover in Germany this September to play at the World Championships.

He took up the sport to actively manage his condition and has since enjoyed great success.

Through structured training at Stratford, Bretherton has now developed his game to reach an international standard.

Stratford club chair, Kevin Taylor said: “Alex embodies everything community sport stands for – courage, positivity and refusing to be defined by a diagnosis.

“His qualification for the Parkinson’s World Championships is not only a personal triumph but an inspiration to everyone facing similar challenges.”

The World Parkinson’s Table Tennis Championships brings together players from across the globe.

And Bretherton will head to Hanover to represent both his club and the wider Parkinson’s community.

Bretherton recently shared his personal journey in the sport with listeners on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire.

He hopes to qualify as a coach in the future, supporting others living with Parkinson’s to experience the same physical, mental and social benefits that table tennis has brought to his life.
