Success across the ages

STRATFORD Cycling Club held another successful open time trial in the shape of a ten-mile, two-lap route from Long Marston.

This is a fast and furious course with each competitor out to prove himself. The glory in time trialling is you never know how you will finish in the standings until the very last rider crosses the line.

The wind was brutal on the day but had dropped by the time racing started. The race was won by Leon Field as first male and Dawn Compton as first female. There was a notable performance from Spencer Corder in his first time trial, aged just 13.

Stratford Cycling Club results: 22:19 – Leon Field (CC Giro); 23:07 – Mark Hamer; 23:21 – Martin Millington; 23:27 – James Webster; 24:16 – Ian Heming; 24:18 – Dan Smith; 24:37 – Peter Ward; 24:40 – Robin Corder; 24:45 – Steve Eggleton; 25:00 – Chris Huxley; 25:03 – Wayne Jones; 25:11 – Carl M Taylor; 25:15 – Jonathan Masters; 25:36 – Neil Gardiner; 25:47 – Jon Chandler (Rotor); 25:49 – Gerard Adams; 25:41 – Nigel Jones; 25:55 – Paul Freeman; 26:30 – Adrian Osborn; 26:37 – David Stockill; 26:39 – Nigel Humphreys; 26:42 – Charlie Edmonds; 27:47 – Will Osley; 27:53 – Spencer Corder (Rotor); 27:59 – Dawn Compton; 28:10 – Keith Walton; 29:40 – Keith Fitzgerald; 31:55 – Ashley Mason; 32:42 – Victoria Jeffs.

On Saturday Stratford CC hosted round three of the West Midlands closed circuit races at Stourport track.

On a cold, windy day 11 children represented the junior section of the club and in the U8 girls’ event Molly Kosta produced a fabulous performance to come second, while other great results came from Lauren Abbott (5th), Elise Storey (7th) and Fifi Kosta (9th).

In the U12s race an early breakaway caused the peloton to fracture and individuals were left battling the strong winds alone. Zoe Parker performed superbly to take gold in the girls’ race, while in the boys’ race Sam Abbott finished sixth and Sam Greenwell, in his first ever race, finished a fantastic seventh.

The U14 boys’ race was a contest which was also split into mini pelotons after two riders went clear from the whistle, bravely chased from the start.

Leading the Stratford riders home in sixth place was Matthew Jordan – his highest place this season – followed by Oscar Martin in eighth. Alex Burden, having remounted following a crash, finished 19th and Joshua Darlow, competing in only his second race of the season, finished 22nd.

Other Stratford riders (competing for Rotor) were Spencer Corder (7th) and Lewis Tinsley (12th).

Two Stratford junior riders travelled to Sheffield to compete in a West Midlands mountain bike race. Despite a crash on a sharp bend near the end of the race, Zoe Parker made the third tier of the podium in the U12 girls’ race, while Jefferson Tear-Vernweij finished 16th in the U12 boys’ event.

In the U14 race other Stratford riders (competing for Rotor) were Spencer Corder (4th) and Lewis Tinsley (17th).

Zoe Parker has also been in action in the Dolan Series in Southport which consisted of six races over three weekends in March in varied weather conditions.

Parker performed superbly in all to come home with a win and two second places which placed her second overall in the series.
