Squash star Owen set to compete in British Championships

SEVENTEEN-year-old George Owen, who plays and coaches at Stratford Squash Club, has qualified for the Tecnifibre British U19 Squash Championships being held at the National Squash Centre in Manchester at the end of the month.

Owen also made a winning debut when he represented Warwickshire in the boys’ U19 Inter-Counties Championships in which they played Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire.

Playing at number four in the team, he was too strong against Oxfordshire’s Jacob Coxon – who was 28 points below him in the England Squash & Racketball rankings – winning 3-0.

The second game was a different story. Up against a very talented Todd Bennett – ranked ten points above him and representing Gloucestershire – Owen had to call on all of his experience.

Playing some inspired squash in a highly entertaining and hard fought match, Owen eventually emerged a 3-0 victor again.

Owen started playing squash ten years ago and has worked hard to progress through juniors, into senior leagues and senior teams and then achieved a level 1 coaching qualification earlier this year.

He now helps the coaching team at Stratford as other juniors hope to emulate his achievements.
