RUGBY UNION - Stratford claim first away win of season at Hereford

STRATFORD-upon-Avon RFC claimed their first away win of the season with a hard-fought 20-15 victory at Hereford.

Tries from Zac Amond, Nathan Geekie and Charlie Powell helped Stratford to a third successive win in the league as the visitors took the points at Belvedere Lane.

And the result means Stratford sit eighth in the Regional 2 Midlands West table.

Hereford dominated possession in the opening exchanges and eventually slotted a penalty between the sticks to take an early three-point lead.

And Stratford’s Dan Whitby levelled the game up with a penalty of his own following an infringement at the maul.

However, the home side scored the only try of the first half when a neat kick caught out the Stratford defence as Hereford took a five-point lead into the break.

Stratford improved after the interval and levelled the game through Amond’s try from a strong maul as the visiting forwards began to impose themselves on the match.

And Hereford then lost a player to the sin bin with Stratford’s pressure beginning to pay off as Geekie crashed over from Jack Young’s pass with Whitby converting.

The away side took the game out of Hereford’s reach as Powell intercepted a pass before running the length of the pitch to dot down leaving several defenders in his wake.

Hereford crossed for a late try to close the gap between the teams but it proved too little too late as Stratford held to claim the points.

Stratford are next in action away at Malvern on Saturday, November 25 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Spring Lane.

Elsewhere, the club’s second team won 10-5 against Leamington as George Fox scored Stratford’s only try and Chris Calthorpe added five points from the kicking tee.
