HARBURY RFC reached the quarter-finals of the Papa Johns Cup with a 36-12 victory against Tewkesbury.

Jason Wood crossed twice with further tries from Rory Pond, Toby Whelan and Ciarán O’Connor at Waterloo Fields.

Harbury scored the game’s first try when Pond collected Charlie Allerton’s perfect offload and dotted down as Ricky Alford narrowly missed with the conversion.

Tewkesbury responded with a converted try to take the lead after missing a penalty from right in front of posts moments earlier.

The visitors missed another kick at goal before Harbury were awarded a penalty try after Ciarán O’Connor was hauled down illegally despite Jackson Hobson having already touched down in the corner.

Harbury went into the break with a five-point lead and quickly extended their advantage when Pond threw a superb pass to Whelan who walked in unopposed as Jason Wood added the extras from a difficult angle.

The home side struck again five minutes later as Wood carried several defenders on his back to the try line from another Allerton offload.

And from the restart, Hobson collected the ball and stepped his through the Tewkesbury defence before offloading to O’Connor who ran in under the posts with Wood adding the extras.

Wood scored his second try of the game to seal Harbury’s place in the last eight before Tewkesbury hit back with a late try from a lineout.

Harbury travel to Trentham on Saturday, April 27 at New Inn Lane.
