RUGBY UNION - Claverdon battle to fine Woodrush victory

Stratford Editorial 16th Feb, 2023   0

CLAVERDON RFC returned to winning ways with a 38-15 victory against Woodrush on the club’s spring Vice President’s event.

George Redwood scored a hat-trick before late tries from Josh Dean, James Barton and Steven Grimsley sealed the win whilst the club raised more than £600 for the late Doddie Weir’s MND charity – My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

The result means Claverdon sit seventh in the Counties 2 Midlands West (South) table.

However, the home side were punished for a slow start as the visitors ran in two early tries after some strong carries from the Woodrush pack.

Claverdon responded when Redwood scored his first try of the day from James Williams’s kick through which was converted by Sam Turrell to reduce the deficit to three points at the break.

And Redwood notched his second try of the game from kick-off as he finished a well-worked move to put Claverdon ahead only for Woodrush to respond almost immediately with a powerful score.

The home side eventually put the game to bed when Redwood completed his hat-trick before Dean, Barton and Grimsley all crossed in quick succession to punish a depleted Woodrush side.

Claverdon are next in action at home to Manor Park on Saturday, February 18 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Ossetts Hole Lane.
