STRATFORD-upon-Avon Boat Club have won British Rowing’s environmental sustainability award for 2024.
British Rowing cited Stratford’s concern about climate change and its impact on grassroots sport which led the club to establish a sustainability working group.
The club has grown the group organically, with no budget, and have taken on a number of projects aimed at reducing the club’s impact on the environment.
This includes the club only using water to wash boats and eco-friendly products in the kitchen to reduce the impact on aquatic life.
Stratford also provide a junior workshop to give a voice to the junior section at the club.
And the club have also adopted a more sustainable approach to their annual regatta, created a bee cafe and launched a second hand kit sales app to promote the reuse of clothing.
Stratford Boat Club chairman, Dawson Curnock said: “The club is keen to take steps to become a more sustainable organisation and to try to limit the impact we have on our river and surroundings.
“Each small step adds up to something bigger.
“Thank you and well done to the working group consisting of Claudine Pearson, Gina Fusco, Lizzie Sartain, Eric Appleton, Jake Blatcher, Chris Belcher and Jenn Birrell for suggesting and running the second hand sales.”
