STRATFORD-upon-Avon Boat Club’s masters rowers triumphed when competing at the Avon Spring Head just outside Bath.

In the masters’ C mixed quad race, the team of Rebecca England, Pete Spivey, Lucy Scarlett and Thomas Doherty went toe-to-toe with Gloucester in blustery conditions.

The Stratford crew made a strong start and held off their opposition to finish second in a respectable time.

And the senior women’s double of Rebecca England and Lucy Scarlett took to the water after floods prevented the duo from training on the river in Stratford.

Racing in the band one event, Scarlett and England were held up under the bridge following a crash between a couple of crews in front of them.

However, Stratford restarted the race well and overtook their opponents to finish third overall.

Doherty and Spivey also took part in single scull races with the latter racing solo in a head race for the first time.

Spivey caught the sculler in front of him and to finish second in his category following a strong finish.

Spivey said: “I was very pleased with my racing line and loved every minute, feeling like my winter training paid off.”

And Doherty went one better to win his race with a similarly strong end to the race as he upped the pace to complete a late overtake.

Doherty added: “It was a very successful day on the river with this being my first ever win in a single.”

However, the cancellation of the British Rowing West Midlands Championships left the club’s junior scullers disappointed.
