STRATFORD Athletic Club’s Andrew Pozzi took another hundredth of a second off his World Lead as he streaked away from the field to win the Müller Indoor Grand Prix 60m hurdles in Birmingham on Saturday.

Pozzi, who clocked a blistering 7.43secs in the final, will now head to next month’s (March 3-5) European Indoor Championships in Serbia as the red-hot favourite.

The former Alcester Grammar School student, who will be joined in the British squad in Belgrade by fellow 60m hurdlers David King and David Omoregie, destroyed the opposition, leaving King in second place in the final and London 2012 Olympic 110m hurdles champion Aries Merritt third.

Pozzi, ranked world number one in the 60m hurdles and coached by Benke Blomkvist at Loughborough University, said: “It all went to plan. I know there is a really quick time in there and I am hoping to get it out at the Euros.

“I’m in really great shape and keep running personal bests. I need to go to the Euros, get through the rounds and be in the final and challenge for gold.

“It has been a long time coming and I have worked hard to be here, so I am enjoying it all the more.”

Stratford-born Pozzi, who the previous weekend retained his 60m hurdles crown at the British Athletics Indoor Team Trials in Sheffield, will also be targeting glory at August’s IAAF World Championships at London’s Olympic Stadium.

However, for now, the 24-year-old’s sole focus is on winning European indoor gold and putting years of injury heartache beyond him.
