New generation are looking good

Stratford Editorial 22nd Apr, 2015 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

RISING stars at Stratford & District Boxing Academy are making their mark in the boxing world.

Sixteen-year-old Miriam Zouhou was selected for an England youth talent day in Birmingham at the end of last year and from that event Miriam was chosen out of more than 40 girls to attend the one-day England Talent day in Sheffield, where it was narrowed down to four girls.

Miriam made such an impression that, despite being the least experienced, she was asked to attend a three-day youth talent development squad once again in Sheffield.

This clearly shows that hard work, dedication, positive work ethics and learning capacity pay off and Miriam is one to look out for on the female circuit.

In Oxfordshire, Miriam competed again Chloe Gorringe of Berinsfield in the south of the county.

Chloe is a very experienced boxer with four times the experience of Miriam and she is a two-time national finalist.

The bout was over four two-minute rounds, which was a first for Miriam, and it was a very close contest, but Miriam dropped a split decision to Chloe on the latter’s home show.

Stratford & District Boxing Academy head coach Mat Pickering said: “We are very proud of Miriam giving away experience and doing four two-minute rounds this early in her career.

“We can push on to the future now and hope to meet Chloe again in the championships.”

Thirteen-year-old Lewis Evans competed in the first bout of his career at Exhall against Louie Garbett of Coventry Boys Club and Pickering said of his efforts: “Lewis boxed very well to instruction, working behind his southpaw jab.

“He finished strongly going into the third round and picked up a split decision victory.”

Ten-year-old Ashley Beard competed in his second skills bout against JJ Williamson of Walsall Wood at the latter’s home show and Pickering added: “This was his second skills bout of the season and, for the time he has been in the gym – just five months – Ashley showed composure in and outside of the ring.

“He had great footwork, movement and boxed well out of his tight defence.”
