Leamington hold Bulls to close out 2020

LEAMINGTON signed off a remarkable year – for a wide range of reasons – in less captivating circumstances with a goalless stalemate with Hereford.

Monday’s 0-0 scoreline failed to produce the grandstand finish that was craved at the Community Stadium, but at least ensured Paul Holleran’s men got back on track in National League North – following the 1-0 Boxing Day defeat to Gloucester City which ended the Brakes’ 11-match unbeaten run.

With the same starting line-up that went down to the Tigers taking to the pitch, the hosts looked intent on making a point and impressed in the early stages with Taylor Allen threatening the Bulls’ goal twice.

The Forest Green Rovers loanee drifted inside from the right flank for a pop at goal for his first attempt, testing the reflexes of goalkeeper Brandon Hall, before going closer still with his second opportunity – forcing a stop following a through ball from Sam Osborne.

It was almost first advantage to the visitors when Tom Owen-Evans’ cross-shot came within inches of finding a teammate, Bulls captain Jared Hodgkiss coming within a yard or two of connecting with the ball for a certain goal.

Chris Camwell fired wide of Jake Weaver’s goal as the first period began to draw to a close, with Leamington’s Danny Waldron unable to test Hall from a prime goalscoring position.

With neither side able to nudge themselves in front at the break, there was much hope of an improved spectacle in the second half.

But while that dream did not become a reality, there were still some notable opportunities for the away side to snatch the points.

New signing George Forsyth was unlucky not to direct a header into the bottom corner of the hosts’ net, with the visitors’ pressure continuing through Kelsey Mooney’s turn and volley that arched over the bar.

That was as close as either side came to deciding the contest in Warwickshire, though the Brakes will undoubtedly be pleased with collecting a point that carries them up to tenth in the table.

Gloucester City are the visitors on Saturday, as Leamington aim to kick off 2021 in winning fashion against the runaway leaders.
