Juniors hailed by coach after Bears victory

Stratford Editorial 19th Dec, 2018   0

COACH Dan Smith praised the performance of juniors Aaron Grant and Ellen Fraser after they helped Warwickshire Bears 3rds to a 47-26 win at Stoke Spitfires in British Wheelchair Basketball League Division Three.

The first quarter proved to be a close contest but the Bears’ defensive intensity, plus Grant’s shooting, meant they opened a 12-7 lead and they moved 22-13 ahead at the end of the first half.

Coach Smith was able to rotate his bench and give court time to the full squad in the second half and Bears led 28-20 at the end of the third quarter before the strong defence allowed them to see out the game.

“It was a great finish to 2018 and great stepping stone to next year,” said Smith.

“I was really pleased with the performance of our junior players Aaron and Ellen. A special mention has to go to Michelle Quested, who had a great game after coming off the bench. We are committed to developing all of our athletes and it’s amazing to see them make such strides.”

The Bears are next in action on January 6 when the 2nds face Aces and the 3rds play the return fixture against Leicester Cobras at Warwickshire College in Stratford Road, Henley.

The Bears are still looking for additional sponsors to help the club in their endeavours to provide sporting opportunities for local disabled people. They are always looking for new recruits and volunteers for the club. Contact the Bears at [email protected] or call coach Tom Masterson on 07946 518354.
