STRATFORD-on-Avon Golf Club have appointed Simon Meade as club captain and Hilda Craig as ladies’ captain to mark the start of the new golf season.

The inaugural captains’ drive-in shotgun events took place a few days apart and was attended by over 100 members to witness this new chapter in the history of the club.

Meade and Craig also selected their respective new vice-captains in Mike Bainton and Annette Howell, as they follow in the footsteps of past captains Mark Thomas and Alison Rigg.

The new captains have joined forces for their chosen charity for the year – the EI Cure Project.

Epidermolytic Ichthyosis (EI) is a genetic skin disorder which is either present at birth or develops in infancy, for which there is no known cure at present. For more information visit: www.eicureproject.com

The club has also welcomed Vis Viswan as the club’s new president and Joan Griffiths as ladies’ president for their two-year tenures from 2024 to 2026.

Club members Kevin Rowan and Nick Vincent won the drive-in greensomes event with Simon Elliott and David Jackson runners-up.

And Alison Walford, Yvette Nunn, Jacki Belchambers and Karen Marrow won the ladies’ drive-in 4BBB stableford event with Katherine Chadbourne, Sharron Houlton, Vicky Barber and Annette Howell runners-up.

Prior to the ladies AGM, outgoing ladies captain Rigg presented a cheque for £11,226.15 to Cancer Research, raised from an extensive range of fundraising activities held throughout her year of office.

Jenny Miremadi, the outgoing ladies’ president also presented last year’s seasonal winners with their trophies, which included: Veronique Lintin (Club Championship), Joy Trinder (Net Club Championship), Hilda Craig (Mixed Foursomes Knockout), Sarah Stanton (Mixed Foursomes Cup), Yvette Nunn (Winter Eclectic), Joy Trinder and Breda Sutton (Winter Greensomes), Valerie Clabburn and Anne Parry (Peggy Luker Trophy) and Avril Newton (Mary Brook Trophy).

Lastly, 24 teams took part in the club’s annual Easter Egg Team Texas Scramble as five teams shared top spot with a net score of 57.

This prompted a complex countback system to separate the five teams with Peter Davies, Simon Elliott, David Jackson and Nick James coming out on top.

Eugene Didora, Anthony Hill, James Huggins and Paul Huggins finished second with Joshua Foster, Kevan Humphriss, Ryan James Humphriss and Mark Weston in third.

And Jonathan Jeffs, Glen Schofield, Roy Summers and Peter Whitehead finished fourth with Ed Haslam, Andrew McArthur, Alex Miles and David Walley in fifth.
