FOOTBALL - Stratford beaten at the death by Needham in frantic finish

Stratford Editorial 7th Apr, 2022   0

STRATFORD Town conceded seven minutes into time added on as the Bards suffered a late collapse to lose 3-2 at home to Needham Market in midweek.

The Bards twice led through Ashley Sammonds and Jordan Williams only for Callum Page’s brace to draw Needham level on two occasions before Ben Fowkes snatched a last gasp winner at the Arden Garages Stadium.

And the result leaves Stratford in 12th place in the Southern League Premier Central table as the Bards look set for a mid-table finish.

The game was goalless for over 75 minutes until a crazy final 12 minutes saw five goals scored including two after regulation time.

Town first took the lead through Sammonds’ 25-yard screamer which found the top corner on 78 minutes.

However, the visitors were soon level when Page fired home just two minutes later after an initial shot had come back off the post.

And Stratford thought they had claimed the points when they retook the lead on 85 minutes after Williams headed home Will Grocott’s corner.

The Bards were denied at the death when Page headed home at the back post on 90 minutes from Luke Ingram’s deep cross.

And Needham stole the points with the last kick of the game as substitute Fowkes lashed an effort into the bottom corner.

Stratford are next in action away at Royston Town on Saturday, April 9 with kick-off at 3pm at the Arden Garages Stadium.
