FOOTBALL - Ebanks on target as Bards hold promotion-chasing Leiston

CALLUM Ebanks scored his second goal in as many games as Stratford Town were pegged back to draw 1-1 with promotion-chasing Leiston as the Bards stretched their unbeaten run to seven matches.

Ebanks opened the scoring in the first half before William Davies levelled for Leiston just past the hour mark at the Arden Garages Stadium.

The result means Stratford sit 18th in the Southern League Premier Central table, one point clear of the relegation zone.

Stratford’s Charlie Williams hit the woodwork twice in the first half as his first effort came back off the inside of the post before his second attempt was tipped onto the underside of the bar by Sam Donkin.

However, the Bards took the lead on 25 minutes when Ebanks shrugged off several Leiston defenders before he slid the ball home from Kyle Bennett’s delicate chipped pass.

The home side were denied by the woodwork a third time in the first half before Josh Hawker fired narrowly wide

Leiston responded well in the second period and grabbed a deserved equaliser on 67 minutes when Davies bundled the ball home following a quickly-taken free-kick.

However, the Bards were more than worthy of a point as Gavin Hurren’s side continued their excellent run of form with an outstanding team performance.

Stratford are next in action away at Hitchin Town on Saturday, March 25 with kick-off at 3pm at Top Field.
