Fern returns to action - with a national title

FERN Hordern’s first duathlon of 2021 ended with a surprise national title.

The Stratford AC athlete recovered from a hand injury to win her age group at the event at Oulton Park in Cheshire) – and then learned it had been nominated as a national championsip.

Until then she had been hampered by a broken hand which had taken months to return to some kind of working order. The good thing about this race is that it was on a race track which meant smooth tarmac (and less jolting on the injured hand).

She entered the race in the 50 – 55 years category. The standard distance is 10k run, 40k bike, 5k run.

She finished in two hours and 16 minutes – which wasn’t too bad considering it was her first duathlon in 18 months.

She later discovered that she had won her age group and that the race had been nominated as the national championships. This meant she won a gold medal and age group national title.
