NORTON Lindsey and Wolverton CC just missed out on winning the league title on the final day of the season with promotion already secured.

Norton took on fellow promoted side Henley-in-Arden in their final game of the campaign with the result to decide who would lift the title.

Lindsey trailed Henley by 12 points heading into the final Cotswold Hills League Second Division fixture of the season at Henley Sports and Social Club.

Norton won the toss and put Henley into bat, having beaten their title rivals earlier in the campaign.

Henley openers Alex Butler (30) and Thomas Williams (8) put on 35 runs for the first wicket before Olly Watson (3-24) embarked on a devastating spell.

The Norton bowler took three wickets in a 16-ball spell without conceding a single run as he removed Butler and Ricardo Rebelo (0).

And Andrew Dellow (1-49) then bowled Sav Lyall (2) to leave the home side in trouble on 55-4.

However, Chris Key (54) blasted a half-century from just 39 balls in an 81-run stand with Noorul Hussein (34) which included six maximums.

Simba Mudimu (4-40) eventually removed Key and Hussein and took two further wickets to leave Henley on 177-9.

However, the rain arrived in the 40th over with no further play possible.

The abandonment meant Henley clinched the title with Norton forced to settle for a runners-up finish.

Norton lost just one game over the course of the season as the club bounced back from successive relegations with a promotion campaign.
