Chasing the birdies on the longest day of the year

Stratford Editorial 26th Jun, 2019   0

A QUARTET of golfers were on the first tee at 5am on the day of the summer solstice (June 21) to play 72 holes of golf over the hilly Welcombe Golf Club course for charity.

Players walked all the way over the four rounds, with no buggies or caddies, to raise a superb £2,950 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Paul Tunnicliffe (14), Neal Tugman (11), Norman Emery (12) and professional Morgan Jackson were sponsored by Bidfood food services which provided food and drink during their pursuit of 36 birdies as they walked around 25 miles.

They golfers, who are pictured having completed the first 18 holes of the Macmillan Summer Solstice Golf Challenge with seven birdies in the bag, finished with a total of 28 birdies – eight short of their target but impressive all the same. Picture by Patrick Holmes (chairman WGC).
