Berlin is beckoning for British champion Pozzi

ANDREW POZZI was in unstoppable form as he secured his place in the British team for this summer’s European Championships by winning the 110m hurdles in dominant fashion at the Muller British Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

Pozzi, who became World Indoor 60m hurdles champion – also in Birmingham – in March, came into the competition under pressure to deliver having finished a disappointing sixth in this year’s Commonwealth Games.

If there was pressure on Pozzi, it certainly did not show as he won his heat in 13.78 before storming to victory in the final in 13.61 to book his spot on the plane to Germany for the European Championships in Berlin (August 7-12).

The Stratford Athletic Club star was followed home at the Alexander Stadium by second-placed David King in 13.81 and third-placed Khai Riley-La Borde in 13.96.

Former Alcester Grammar School student Pozzi said: “It was an interesting race with strong winds so I didn’t know what to do. When we were on the line it seemed to be coming from behind, but it was really good fun to be out in Birmingham.

“I’m not in bad shape but I’ve had a few bad races, but I’ll be ready for Berlin. There’s a lot of quality in lots of events so winning the trials and cementing your place is incredibly important.

“I’m feeling really good but given the wind you can’t read too much into the time.”
